Being reserved and subdued in public. Americans are loud. (Usually) Nice, but loud. I'm learning to use my inside voice.
Considering others before confronting issues. Belizeans are known for being non-confrontational. Sometimes this is a problem. But there's something to be learned from people who are considerate of what their opinions might mean to someone else.
Moving through life a little slower. You don't need to whiz through life at high speeds all the time. Sometimes it's okay to stay in the slow lane and take a moment to linger and enjoy the life you are living right now, this minute. The next minute will be here soon enough. Matthew 6:34.
Acknowledging people (even strangers) when you see them. As previously mentioned, I'm a shy introvert. I don't like to talk to strangers. I sometimes even pretend not to see people I know. I don't know why, I just do. But in Belize, it's important to recognize everyone. That's why the woman at the fruit stand calls me Lady. She doesn't know my name, but she needs to call me something. Because I am something. I'm a person. That's kind of beautiful when you think about it. Everyone is something to someone.
Don't waste the wifi. Some things aren't worth it. This one is less deep and philosophical. But when you pay not just for a wifi connection, but for how much wifi you use, you quickly realize that some things on the internet aren't worth it. Next time you watch a bunch of videos or fall down the rabbit hole of comments on a news article and wonder where the time went...just think - some things aren't worth it.
Appreciate the rain. (Metaphorically too.) When it's hot, you wish for a rainstorm. Even though it keeps you from getting things done and ruins the roads. Sometimes we need that in life too. We need to wash away some things in our lives, even through the brokenness. The roads will dry in time.
If there's anything to take as we move from one year to the next, I think that might be it. That's what I'm taking with me. What's the biggest lesson you've learned this year?
